In September, TXU Energy’s community relations team took their signature Committed to Community Growth program down South to bid summer farewell and sponsor the TXU Energy and PSJA (Pharr, San Juan and Alamo) Tree Planting Project in Pharr, Texas.
One hundred trees were given in an effort to assist in beautifying the tri-cities. Each city received 25 trees which have been planted in a variety of parks and schools. The event and ceremonial tree planting took place at the City of Pharr’s Tierra del Sol golf course, attracting more than 150 people.
The event was commemorated with performances by the PSJA Southwest High School band and cheerleading squad who all brought their “green” spirit. State Senator Eddie Lucio and State Representative Sergio Munoz Jr., both spoke at the event and shared special remarks including their appreciation for partnerships such as these to beautify the region and state.
In Senator Eddie Lucio’s address, he admired the collaborative nature of the project and thanked TXU Energy for their contribution. “I want to commend TXU Energy for this program and for their urban tree farm; it has been the start of many community projects across the state.”
In another “green” statement, TXU Energy exhibited their Chevy Volt, allowing Senator Lucio, students, and others to experience an electric vehicle.
Over 100 students from PSJA schools attended the event and helped plant ceremonial trees on the golf course, with elected officials from the tri-cities. These students were members of environmental clubs at their schools, and through these clubs they help educate and promote the importance of protecting the environment throughout their communities for today and for generations to come.
Since 2002, TXU Energy has invested in communities through their Committed to Community Growth program. Since its beginning, over 170,000 trees have been planted across the state of Texas.
